How-To Create a Luxe Tablescape Without Going Broke

tablescape by Romancing the Wedding

I love tablescapes! Tablescapes define the style and mood of a wedding and reception. They can be extravagant and opulent like the one above, or understated and elegant. No matter your style or budget, you can create a tablescape reflective of your vision for your wedding day with a few fab finds and some ingenuity. Keep in mind, building a tablescape is all about layers. It may seem overwhelming when you look at a tablescape that inspires you... all the pieces that have to come together, all the little details...aaaggghhh! But fear not, here is a list of layers and some fab places to find steals and deals to create the perfect table for your special day!
FIRST: Table Linens

Depending on your inspiration table, you may have to forgo the linens provided by your venue (usually matte white or cream) and find something with a bit more interest. The table scape shown above wouldn't have had nearly he wow-factor without those fabulous embroidered gold tablecloths. this pintuck tablecloth from LinenStock adds just enough interest at a reasonable price (between $10-$15.00). Or, for a more dramatic effect, use a taffeta overlay from Beyond Elegance

Don't forget the napkins and chargers or placemats.

place setting by Australiaentertains.com.au

You can easily swap out the damask charger plates for pretty patterned paper (same effect but way easier on the wallet). The menu is cardstock, and great favor boxes can be found at Good Things: Wedding Favors. Be sure to check out Beau Coup Weddings for their perfectly adorable favor bags (they're only $.64 a piece)!

Personally, I think chair covers are a waste of money and kind of visually distracting. Most reception venues have bamboo styled white folding chairs. They are not distracting and really, do you want the chairs to be as gussied-up as your bridesmaids?

SECOND: Centerpiece

This is often the scariest part since it can cost hundreds of dollars and can be quite complex. Large over-the-top arrangements are certainly dramatic and have a major get major points in the first impression department. However, they are not very functional in an intimate setting such as a wedding reception. There is nothing worse than having a giant obstruction annoying the crap out of you as you crane our neck to see what's going on across the table, or at the wedding party table. If you go tall, go tall and unintrusive like this centerpiece that allows for unobstructed views of the entire reception.

An alternative is to do a collection of short bouquets, or one full short bouquet of roses (my personal fav). You can dress up the table with candles, little candle lamps, or even small shallow vases that can accommodate a single floating flower or candle at each place setting.

Centerpiece from Seattle Flowers

Small vases can be purchased for next to nothing. Save-on-Crafts has a variety of smaller vases for under $5.00 a piece, and Global Rose should be your one-stop-shop for fabulous flowers at unbelievably low prices. I have used them before and their roses are fabulous (you can get 200 for under $150)! A good full rose bouquet like the one above will take about 25 to 30 roses, so for about $30 a table you can have a uber-luxe looking centerpiece for way cheaper than a florist (the one above is $89.99 not including delivery). Now pat yourself on the back for being so ingenious!

THIRD: Accessories

Placecard holder from AmericanBridal.com

We're talking place card holders, table number holders, candle holders, holder holders... you get the idea. This is where you can really lose control of your budget. Look on ebay for tea lights and candle holders. I found a listing for 72 votive candles and glass holders for $49.97! Not too shabby. Don't want to send money on place card holders (which you will never use again, and your guests will throw away)? Dress up a standard tent-style place card by dipping the bottom front 1/4" with glue and then dipping in seed beads. Color code the beads to indicate meal choice to the catering staff. Adorable, and cheap, cheap, cheap!
Napkin rings can be created easily with some pretty ribbon (buy in bulk at Schiff Ribbons and save big$$$) and a monogram stamped card stock seal. Get a custom monogram stamp from SimonStamps.com for about $15.00. Just upload your art work, and in a couple days you'll have a custom stamp.

Make a Statement with a Handmade or Vintage Handbag...

Unique Wedding Handbags

After the last two months of frantic work and late nights, I finally have a couple days to relax before the next big cluster of designs are scheduled for production.  And as I am not working with my hands right now I thought I would showcase some other people's labor of love, in the form of the finest handmade wedding handbags I could find.  Of course the first is a gorgeous creation done by couture invitation designer, Sherri Weese.  And she never disappoints.  "This original design features a stunning ivory pleated satin clutch with exquisite beaded trim around the top, 2 generous layers of delicate natural white swan feathers, a 1" band of shimmering sequin trim - wrapped around the entire bag. An elegant ivory silk and velvet rose provides a the perfect finishing touch of romance" (from her new etsy shop).  Gorgeous!

I am a huge lover of vintage evening bags. My grandma is a collector of all things antique, so when I was a little girl we would all receive vintage handbags and jewelry for christmas.  You couldn't feel more girly with a fab beaded bag and little vintage gloves.  I found this fabulous one-of-a-kind vintage 1940's handbag from Hilda's Handbags.  She has a fabulous collection of beaded, hardcase, and designer clutches and bags at unbelievable prices.

Another fabulous vintage find is this 1940-1950's satin clutch that has been intricately embroidered with silver thread. At under $50, this bag makes a big statement without a hefty price tag.  Check out the  fabulous collection of vintage purses and handbags at Mademoiselle White's etsy shop.

This gorgeous black and white sead bead bag is named "Diamonds are Forever".  What is truly unique is that this is a DIY handbag.  That's right, you order the pattern and construct it yourself.  Talk about an accomplishment.  I am tempted to give it a whirl myself.  Order your patterns from the Bead Lady.

I am a big fan of clear lucite clutches from the 40's and 50's... they are just so remniscent of Cinderella's glass slippers.  This is a perfect example of mid-century craftsmanship and style. A clamshell clutch embellished with Austrian crystals... simple, yet so romantic. Love! Sift through the one-of-a-kind vintage finds at the Atlanta Vintage Gallery to find your perfect piece of fashionable history.

Unique and Couture Flower Girl Dresses

I went to a wedding last weekend and they had two adorable flower girls who were so cute, and sooo well behaved through the long Episcopalian service - more than I can say about my son who was removed 5 minutes into it.  I digress...
But that inspired me to seek out some of the most beautiful and unique flower girl dresses on the market.  Often flower girl dresses are an after-thought; most are somewhat expected mini-versions of a bridal gown.  Although that is sort of the idea (I get it), I love something unusual... even if the statement is made by a 4 year old.   The dress above is something I want to buy for myself today, if only to prance around the house pretending to be a fairy princess.  The designs by Tiara's Boutique are extraordinary, and she is happy to customize size (yep... she'd make one for me) and uses up to 300 YARDS of tulle in each one!!  Gorgeous!

Belle Du Jour

Belle Du Jour is another fabulous boutique specializing in unique wedding wear.  I found this adorable Bluebelle flower girl dress there, and what's not to love?  Sparklies, organza, satin ribbon, a hoop skirt for pete's sake... I would have loved this dress until it was threadbare when I was little.  U.K designer Maggie Cook creates these fabulous pieces, as well as jewelry, headpieces, grown-up gowns and more.

Sweet Plume

Okay, this may be the most couture flower girl dress have ever seen, and I love, Love, LOVE it!  Created by Sweet Plume, this dress has everything: a chocolate brown duponi silk bodice, gold sparkly tulle on bottom, ivory feathered apron, gold sash, and a peony embellishment... and it costs about what you'd pay for a mass-produced flower girl dress at your local bridal shop!  I want to get married again just so I can have a wee one hop down the aisle in this beauty!

A gorgeous dupioni silk dream fashioned after a popular gown style from couture design house Petite Parfait.  I love this dress style (it wasn't around when I worked in bridal, and I sooo would have loved to skip down the runway at our local fashion shows in this baby... perhaps a larger version, but, whatever).

If you a little girl and she happens to be the kind of girl who swoons over petticoats, Johanna Grace is your one-stop-shop for all things uber-elegant.  She has an enormous collection of couture and custom gowns for little girls and young ladies, like the above silver silk flower girl dresses.  I simply can't say enough... so here's another picture...

Would you not have grinned ear to ear if your mom brought this home for you to wear?  I am all about the fashion sensibilities of the early 60's (Mad Men is my favorite show... because of the fashion)  and this dress oozes it. I want it now!  Located in New York, Johanna Grace is truly an atelier of couture girls clothing.  Love!!!

Wish Upon A Wedding...

So I just signed up as a volunteer with a fabulous network of wedding vendors who'd like to make a real impact on someone's life.   Wish Upon A Wedding is an organization that provides weddings at destinations across the United States for individuals facing life-threatening illness. It is a chance for couples to enjoy a very special day, without any thoughts of existing health issues, while surrounded by their closest family and friends. Since January, when it was founded in San Fransisco, 15 chapters have popped up across the country, and with such an awesome goal, I anticipate a ton more will sprout up by the end of the year.

Beth and Nick were the Chicago chapter's first "wish" wedding.  They were married April 18, 2010 (Congrats)!!!!

Beth and Nick had been together for almost 10 years when Beth was diagnosed with urachal adenocarcinoma. A few short weeks later, as she was about to undergo surgery to remove part of her bladder, her navel and several lymph nodes, Nick quietly returned to the jewelry store they had visited together and purchased the engagement ring. That evening, Nick proposed.  And although it has undoubtedly been a difficult road and Beth will continue the fight for her life, Beth and Nick had the wedding they always dreamed of thanks to vendors who donated their time, money, expertise, and compassion via Wish Upon A Wedding.

Here are a couple pics of items and services donated that made this dream-come-true wedding come true...

Floral and Event Design: Blumen Floral and Event Design, Amy Crum

Wedding Dress: Bridal Mansion of Lisle, Jane Skarosi

Wedding Cake: Take the Cake, Mary Winslow

Rentals and Linens: Classic Party Rental, Sandy Sobczak
Wedding Location and Food: Giovan’s Restaurant, Giovan Cullota
Lighting: Frost Lighting, Samantha Steele

Photography: Gerber and Scarpelli Weddings, Kurt Gerber
Makeup: Starlight Makeup, Lillian Toma

You can read their story, and see a complete list of the vendor's who shared their services on the Wish upon a Wedding website.

The story touched my heart... it's honestly hard not to tear up thinking about it.  Knowing there is an organization where I can donate my time and expertise to a couple who will forever cherish those precious moments together, makes me feel good about the world.  We often get wrapped up in deadlines, number-crunching, production, and all the general hulabaloo of the wedding industry and forget the whole reason we're in it.  To make dreams come true.

I hope all you vendors out there will check out the org, and sign up as a wish granter.

Thanks for reading ;)

Vintage Engagement Rings... Thinking Outside the Big Box Stores

I love vintage diamond jewelery.  I think it stems from when I was a little girl and all the little old ladies in the neighborhood would sell their vintage costume jewelry at garage sales, that I would pick up for a steal.  Nothing better than fabulous sparklies for a seven year old who thinks she's a princess.  I have since grown up, and although I still love some of the gaudy rhinestone trinkets I purchased decades ago, I am more inclined to drool over the real stuff.  Like theis gorgeous Emerald and Diamond vintage engagement ring from CamelliaCollection on Etsy.

Okay, maybe not appropriate for an engagement ring, this vintage circa 1936 diamond and ruby cocktail ring is about as stunning as they come.  This ring from Julzz4u on Etsy has over 3.5 carats of diamonds and 2 carats of rubies, and an unlimited wow factor.

I am a sucker for double mount diamond rings.  I love the idea of having a diamond (gorgeous on it's own) framed by even more gems.  Talk about gilding the lily.  This pre-1920's Edwardian engagement ring from Fay Cullen has about 1.25 carats of diamonds and 1 carat of sapphires.

Fay Cullen is an absolute treasure trove of unique vintage and antique jewelry.  This art deco engagement ring boasts a 1.57 carat center stone, not to mention the superior quality emeralds that embellish it. So, this one is mine.  I put dibs on it.

This is an example of a Georgian cluster ring with pink foiled diamonds.  Georgian rings are exceptionally rare as over time they were often elted down and crafted into more contemporary styles.  The Georgian period spans from 1714-1830, the victorian period covers 1837-1901, where as the Edwardian period between 1901-1915, and art deco spans the '20's and 30's.  This antique ring from The Three Graces is circa 1780-1800 and shows an excellent and rare example of pink foiling.  During the Georgian period, diamonds were often coated with foil and then set in a flat setting (ulike the rings of today, which have holes underneath the setting to let light bounce around more). You can see how the pink foil gives the ddiamonds a slightly pink hue.

This ring from The London Victorian Ring Company is an example of a popular Victorian era engagement ring style, this gold band displays two intertwined serpents which symbolized eternal love.  Although I personally associate snakes with scary badness, I guess that wasn't always the case.  And I'll take a snake ring with a giant sapphire and ruby on it anyday.  Now, don't go decorating your church and reception hall with a bunch of snakes just 'cause they represent eternal love.  They also represent scary badness.

Awesome Bridal Headpieces

Headpiece by Artikal

I was never a fan of bridal headgear.  I thought blushers were sort of, well, passe. I thought a nice simple single layer finger tip veil was the way to go.  After all, how can the bride shine if there is a giant birdcage on her head? My opinion has since changed now that I have discovered the fabulous world of couture bridal millinery. These stunning couture pieces from Artikal can do nothing but add an overture of drama and elegance to any bride's final look.  Not to mention they custom craft a piece of head-art for about the same price as you'd find a run of the mill veil at your local shop.  I can not say enough.  I am in LOVE with her work!

Finding really interesting, yet not over the top (think: a wedding at the Kentucky Derby) is actually quite difficult.  But several months ago I came across Bethany Lorelle on Etsy and as far as I am concerned, it is one stop shopping for wedding headpieces for the whole bridal party.

Something so simple yet beautiful can make a ho-hum bridesmaid dress seem just a little bit more fabulous.  Go ahead and save your money. Forgo the Jim Hjelm dresses and get something affordable that you can doll up with accessories like this gorgeous hair candy from Bethany Lorelle.

I love this peacock and crystal headband from Sweet Grass Mill on Etsy.  Perfect for a navy wedding... what a way to add a bit of the unexpected and to make your girls feel truly special!

All I can say is " oooh oooh ooh!" LOVE IT!

I love this on a bride with a black and white wedding gown.  What a fabulously unexpected accessory to add just the right amount of drama and sexiness.

Bottomline: Don't be afraid to add a little fabulousness with a headpiece that may seem a bit out of character.  The rhinestone tiara will always be there if you chicken out.
